Is is safe to mix a few drops of lavender essential oil in baby massage oil to make it more soothing for baby?

I am using Johnson and Johnson regular massage oil so far and someone told me that mixing lavender essential oil will make it more soothing when I massage the baby. My baby is a month old.Is is safe to mix a few drops of lavender essential oil in baby massage oil to make it more soothing for baby?
Congratulations on your new baby. Yes lavender essential oil is safe for your baby as long as you just use a few drops. Essential oil is natural oil expressed from a plant and used in many cosmetic compounds. You can also make your own lotion that is all natural for your baby if you wanted too.

In a full bottle of baby oil put 3 drops of essential oil, and blend. Lavender is very calming and soothing to the senses. The act of massaging an infant is also a great way to calm them. They love being touched especially by Mommy. Is is safe to mix a few drops of lavender essential oil in baby massage oil to make it more soothing for baby?
Baby massage has many many benefits for both you and your baby, some of which are infant parent bonding or attachment, makes your baby feel loved. Helps digestion, aids relaxation and promotes better sleep.

When you massage your baby you both releases the 鈥榝eel good鈥?hormone oxytocin therefore you should NOT mix any other oils with smells, although I agree lavender and lots of great qualities it is hiding your natural odour that you will both release. part of your baby development is smell and smell is huge and important for your baby to recognise you the parent.

So I disagree with mixing lavender you should use natural organic oil such as sunflower oil or olive oil which has no smell and is edible if baby puts its hand in its mouth.

Yes, Lavender is one of the most gentle essential oils. Only put 2 or 3 drops per 10mls of massage oil. It's also more soothing of you very gently warm the oil - put the bottle or holder into a little dish of warm water.

Chamomile is another gentle and relaxing oil. You can get some excellent books about aromatherapy and baby massage.
Some caution and advice...

Yes, you can use Lavender essential oil in your massage blend for your baby, HOWEVER... please know that there are different types of Lavender that are not interchangeablee. Lavender vera or officinalis are fine. Avoid a Lavender stoechas or latifolia. Bear in mind that the skin is an organ and that there is trans-dermal absorption of everything that you apply. Remember that when you are applying chemicals or essential oils to the whole body.

For a baby use less than 3% dilution, err on the side of caution and start with less than that. Less than 3% of the total is essential oil. Here is some math, it is easy. Go slowly and say it out loud, it helps. 30 drops in one ml. 30 mls in an ounce. If you have 100 mls of baby oil, you will use 3 mls or less of Lavender essential oil for a 3% dilution. That is 90 drops. 30 drops for a 1% dilution. A whole bottle of baby oil is how many mls??
